Internet security suites go beyond simple antivirus protection to include email scanning, identity protection
and parental controls. Trend Micro Titanium Internet Security is a complete internet security suite that’s ideally suited for those aiming to protect their entire family. This security suite comes with exceptionally adept parental controls, and extra PC licenses are surprisingly affordable. Trend Micro offers this suite in reasonably priced three, five or 10 licenses packages so you can easily secure all the PCs and laptops that your family uses.
Our reluctance to place this security suite higher in our ranking stems from inconsistent test results. In March 2011 running Windows 7 they scored 3.5 (out of 6) by AV-Test in protection, repair and usability. However, in August running the same OS they scored 4.5, 2 and 5. A score of 2 out of 6 in repair is not reassuring. However, we did not base our entire rating on one test score. In the July 2011 full product tests conducted by AV-Comparatives, they did quite well. In this test series, the suite earned an Advanced+ rating in their four-month test series against other full suites. In the AV-Comparatives tests, they landed roughly in the top quarter of the 17 high-end products compared. Two other test labs, West Coast Labs and VB100, have not tested Trend Micro in over three years. ICSA has not tested Trend Micro. To summarize, they score inconsistently with one lab, high with another and three other labs have not tested them. Based on the AV-Test and AV-Comparatives results alone, they appear to provide average to adequate protection. However, when it comes to internet security, above average to nearly perfect protection is better. To put it into perspective, would you want 1 percent of the malware you encounter to plague your computer?
On the positive side, Trend Micro Titanium Internet Security employs excellent parental control tools. With this security software, you can create unique profiles for each member of your family. You can configure specific filters or accept default website filters based on your child’s age. For example, you may allow your child to email but block chat and instant messaging conversations. You can also block or allow specific websites and set time restrictions. To ensure that your teens do not attempt to disable or alter their profile, all settings are password protected. Another useful ability this software offers is data theft prevention. With this tool, you can block specific information from being entered into webpages, emails or chat conversations. Data that you may want to protect might include your address, social security numbers, credit card numbers or phone numbers. A few other extras that this suite contains, which others do not, include a tool for completely erasing files and 2GB of online backup.
Trend Micro Titanium Internet Security also includes the security tools you would expect a security suite to include such as antivirus, antispyware, email scanning, a firewall, rootkit detection and application protection. For additional protection, you can upgrade to their Maximum version that also includes smartphone security, social network protection, email and IM link scanning, Wi-Fi network authentication and tablet protection.
The Titanium Internet Security suite has a clean, easy-to-understand interface, and we did not encounter download or installation problems when we tested this product.
